5 Tips to Write a Great Resume

By Sinal Patel

Whether you are a nursing student or an experienced nurse looking to find a new job, these 5 tips will help you write a great resume that will catch the attention of recruiters and help you land a job!

Tip 1: Begin your resume with a header including your full name, followed by your job title or most recent degree. On the next line, provide your contact information and include your email address and phone number. On the last line, include your address—preferably the city, state, and zip code. When formatting this section of your resume, all information should be aligned at the center of the page.

Tip 2: Right below your contact information should be a summary of your qualifications and objectives. Two to three sentences describing your current role, most recent degree, past experience, skills, and what you are looking for in your next job is a great way to highlight your skillset.

Tip 3: When listing your professional experience, always be sure to include the name of the company you worked for, your job title, and the dates (month and year) of when you worked there. If you worked in a short-term contract position, specify that in your resume. List your past experiences in a reverse chronological order. Give specific examples of what you did and if possible, quantify the results.

Tip 4: Keep the format (Font & Size) of your resume simple and consistent. When choosing the tense, use past tense for past jobs and present tense for current jobs. This will make your resume appear neat and organized and make it easier for the recruiter to read and follow.

Tip 5: Proofread and Share

It’s important to avoid spelling and grammatical errors on your resume. It may be helpful to share your resume with a friend or colleague and ask them to review it to receive feedback or tips for improvement!
